For some time the question has arisen ema scotland whether the American independent cinema is really so independent as they want us to believe: the indie-movie, by definition, is the film that does not have to depend on the big production houses, which achieves good (and sometimes excellent) film without the need for big budgets, but only with ideas. Now, however, the studios have realized that the independent cinema has since its a slice of the public is not indifferent and have adjusted accordingly, making ema scotland the indie-movie a real film genre (think that Warner Bros, for one thing, has a division that produces only low-budget films, but not independent in the strict sense of the term). So, where is it the true soul of American independent cinema? The answer lies in the mumblecore. It is a sub-genre of independent film, characterized (of course) by low-budget productions ema scotland and actors usually little ema scotland known, whose stories are heavily focused ema scotland on a natural and spontaneous dialogue. "Naturalness" (in the dialogues but also in the staging and interpretations) is the key word such mumblecore. Its main features are the real environments, in which the interior ema scotland as a bar or apartments are real and not rebuilt; the protagonist is often a character in their twenties and thirties, while the theme of the film is in many cases focused on the social relations of the protagonists, the insecurities and difficulties of the post-graduate education. Sometimes there is not a clear narrative structure, and this makes the film mumblecore unpredictable. The black and white photography ema scotland (but only in some cases) and the soundtrack sought are other features of this genre, which has its roots in the French New Wave (particularly in the films of Eric Rohmer and in some of Truffaut) and in a way has as big brother "Manhattan" by Woody Allen, that apart from the budget, shares many of the basic features of the mumblecore. In a sense, you could almost say that the mumblecore is street ema scotland photography applied to the cinema.
Although you can define mumblecore films of the last century as "Girlfriends" by Claudia Weill, "Stranger than Paradise" by Jarmusch, in some ways "Stolen ema scotland Kisses" by Truffaut or the aforementioned "Manhattan" by Allen, and although the genre start take shape in the 90s with films of Linklater's "Slacker" and "Before Sunrise," the first real film mumblecore is for everyone "Funny Ha Ha" (2002) by Andrew Bujalski, who also coined the term during a mumblecore 'interview for Indiewire. You start talking about a real movement, as many actors and directors of these films appear ema scotland in movies colleagues, collaborate with them and promote the work of others. Besides Bujaski, ema scotland directors who were associated ema scotland with the mumblecore ema scotland are Lynn Shelton ("Humpday"), ema scotland Aaron Katz ("Dance Party USA", "Quiet City"), Joe Swanberg ("Lol"), Alex Holdridge ("In search of a midnight kiss ") and of course the Duplass brothers (" Baghead, ema scotland "" Cyrus "), among the few to make a name outside the borders of the US. To revive the movement we thought last year Noah Baumbach with the wonderful "Frances Ha", which received international acclaim and made the muse Greta Gerwig of mumblecore. Baumbach's film has given lifeblood to a genre that for too long has been confined to the most hidden of the festival, and rarely saw the way the cinema (at least as far as Europe and especially Italy ).
In Europe, what happens? There is no shortage of rivals American colleagues and "followers" to this film movement (for example in Germany has existed since 2009 and it is even called "Berlin mumblecore movement", even has its own manifesto, the "Sehr Gutes Manifest"). We are talking about Germany we must mention the magnificent "Oh boy," directed by Jan Ole Gerster, released last year, also in Italy. Other European examples can be the beautiful Danish film "Dark Horse" by Dagur Kari, or the Spanish "In the City of Sylvia" by José Luis Guerin or somewhat English "Bomber" by Paul Cotter. Germany aside, the mumblecore has not managed to gain a foothold in Europe, another reason why the US films of this kind are hardly the way to get up to our rooms. Maybe, with the arrival of "Frances Ha" (due out in Italy in May), something will change. We'll see
